The quest system is designed to offer the majority of an XP
rewards for the game. While killing monsters and hack n' Slash is still a
good way to make XP, you can probably make more XP faster doing quests.
Monsters are worth very little by themselves but tend to be "in the way" when
trying to accomplish a goal with an XP reward. Camping monsters is not
frowned upon, do whatever floats your boat, but you can probably
make more XP doing simple quests which require the slaying of particular
monsters in particular areas. The real "meat" of the XP comes from
quest completions and players aren't required to kill monsters to accomplish a
quest. A player can usually make just as much XP if a monster can be avoided, snuck
past, charmed, distracted, pick pocketed or otherwise overcome by some other means besides
combat. However there are plenty of quests where the slaying of a particular
creature or group of creatures IS the goal and rewards given upon their
destruction.
Quest Experience Points (XP)
The amount of XP given out when doing quests is usually
pretty significant and is dished out at every step along the way. The amount
of XP gained goes up on every step of the quest and the exact amount is
calculated against a "base xp" for that quest. The amount of XP received when
a step of a quest is completed is equal to 10% of the
base xp value times the step number you're completing. The first
step is worth 10% of the base xp, the second step is worth 20% of the base
xp etc. You make bigger and bigger rewards the farther you go into a quest.
For example, on a quest with a base xp of 1000, the first
step completed would yield 100xp (10% of 1000). The second step when
completed would yield another 200xp (20% of 1000), the third step 300xp and
so on. The total amount of xp received by the time the quest is completed
will vary depending on how many steps there are and what the base xp is. A
typical quest has 4 steps and that happens to come out to be 100% of the
base xp (10%
+ 20% + 30% + 40% = 100% of the base) but a ten step quest will yield 450%
of the base xp when you add it up!
Group Questing
The same amount of xp is given to everyone
in the group regardless of their level. All players in the group will have
their quest journals updated to match the player who completed the step but
players will only receive xp if they are within 25 meters of the player
who is completing the step. Players will also only receive xp for the
last step in that quest that THEY were on (see below).
When a player in the group completes a step in a quest,
everyone in the group will advance in that quest to the same step. The other
players will only receive xp for the LAST step in that quest that they were
on, which means zero if they were not even on that quest at that time.
Having been brought into the quest however, this same player will now earn
xp for all further steps completed by the group as normal but missed out on
the xp for the steps in between. You only receive
xp for completing the current step in a quest you were on regardless of how
far ahead another player advances your journal.
For example Player A is on step 2 of a quest and is in a
group with Player B who completes step 6 of the same quest. Player A will be
brought up to step 7 in the quest along with his comrade but will only
receive xp for completing step 2 (i.e. he does not gain the XP for steps 3,
4 and 5). When Player B completes step 7, 8 and 9 Player A will advance and
receive the same xp as player B as they normally would. You do not receive
any xp nor does your journal go backwards if a player in your group completes a step in a quest which you have
already completed yourself (i.e. if a player in your group completes step 2
while you were already at step 6, you will get nothing).
Repeating Quests
Quests can be repeated as many times as
you like. Quests must be finished first however before you can start them
again. While on a quest, you can only move your quest journal forward, never
backwards and your quest can never be deleted until it is finished. Any
quest which is listed under the "Finished" tab in your quest journal can be
started again, the server treats finished quests as non-existent.
