Earning XP

You can earn XP in a variety of ways in the World of Torr.  Almost anything you do while playing will earn you XP to some degree. The theory is that a player should make relatively the same amount of XP for the same amount of time spent in the game regardless of which activity he is participating in, provided he is doing it well of course. If you enjoy classic hack n' slash game play, you are more than welcome to do so but you can also make about the same XP by doing simple quests, exploration or even tradeskills if you prefer. We try to design the world so players won't be forced to do one sort of activity in order to advance their character just so they can have actual fun doing something else. Hopefully the activities you have fun doing will earn you enough XP to compete with power gamers.

The XP Table in The World of Torr has been dramatically scaled up from the standard XP table in Neverwinter Nights but the amount of XP you can earn is also significantly increased (see table below). It was also designed so that players will be able to attain approximately level 3-5 very quickly so as to establish themselves. From then on however, the XP required to level begins to quickly increase. Players who play regularly should have characters around level 8-12 even after months of play . Attaining level 15 should take a significant amount of play and reaching level 20 should take quite a long time.

* Epic levels (21+) will most likely be a dramatic event for your character. It will take special quests and/or other actual players devoting themselves to you as "followers" in order to "Ascend" into a Demigod status (i.e. Epic Levels). This Ascension will move your character to a new set of Intra-Planar areas from where you can occasionally visit the normal planes. See Epic Levels for details.

Multi-Class XP Penalty: There is a global XP penalty for multi-classing your character which cannot be avoided by any race or configuration. If your character has 2 classes, they will make 25% less XP on all quests and monster kills. If your character has 3 classes the penalty is 40%. There is no way to avoid this penalty. This penalty only affects monster kills and quest XP. Experience gained from crafting skills and exploration is not affected.

Questing: The XP amounts for completing quests is not handed all at once at the end. Every step you complete while on a quest will earn a portion of the total XP for that quest. Everyone in the group will advance to that step in the quest and earn an equal amount of xp for the step being completed (i.e. it is not divided up). However, players on different steps of the same quest will only earn XP for the last step they were on. For a detailed explanation on how XP distribution for quests work, see Quest System

Killing Monsters: The classic Hack n' Slash of monsters earns XP based solely on the Challenge Rating of the creature killed. The amount of XP doesn't scale with the level of the killing player or his party. There is a group bonus of 10% per party member up to 10 players for monster kills.

The XP on monster kills is divided on a "level share" basis. The XP is divided by the number of levels in the group and then the players get one share per level they have. For example, in a group consisting of a level 9 and a level 1 player with a kill worth 1000 XP, the level 9 player would get 900 XP and the level 1 would get 100 XP. In the same example, 2 players at level 5 would get 500 XP each.

Duplicate Monster Reduction: There is a XP penalty for killing the same monsters repeatedly. For every 5 kills of the exact same monster you will get a 10% reduction in the XP which that monsters gives you. This penalty increases 10% for every 5 kills you make against the same monster until it hits 0%. This penalty is temporary however. It goes away at the rate of one kill every 10 minutes. You will receive this penalty even if you are not the one who actually killed the monster. Simply gaining the XP for a monster kill will count towards your penalty

Exploration XP: Players receive exploration XP for simply visiting significant places in an area (i.e. Exploring). The amount of XP varies from a few dozen XP to a few thousand XP. You can get exploration XP for simply visiting areas in a kingdom or visiting other cities, you will also get XP for visiting dangerous cave and dungeon entrances as well as several places within those dungeons. The amount of XP goes up for the more far off and dangerous a particular place is. You can revisit an area and get full XP again after about an hour with partial and penalized XP for revisiting earlier. There are usually several of these locations in every area.

Rangers get a bonus to exploration xp on the order of 10% per level of Ranger their character has (i.e. level 15 Rangers earn +150% normal or 2 1/2 times as much). Rangers also get "Group Scout" XP from every nearby party member who earns exploration XP. Every Ranger in the group will earn 5% per level of Ranger of the XP your party member receives for exploring an area. For example if you are a level 10 Ranger and your party member gets 100XP for exploring an area, you will receive 50XP if you are within 25 meters of them.

Tradeskills: All of the Secondary Skills your player can take earn you XP every time you need to make a check against them. This is true for the tradeskills like Armorcrafting and Weaponcrafting as well as the special skills like Faith or Leadership. The amount of XP varies from skill to skill, tradeskills don't offer much XP but are checked frequently while Ritual Magic is dangerous to fail and can only be done infrequently so it and offers much more. The amount of XP is also based greatly off of the level of success you achieve when your skill is checked. The higher level of success you achieve, the more XP is granted.

Bounty Hunting: When a player is wanted by the law in a kingdom, another player can attack and subdue that player and arrest them themselves to earn XP. Any player that has a warrant and is "killed" by another player in the same kingdom the warrant is in will receive Bounty XP. The amount is based on the amount of demerits in crime the offending player has committed.

The player must be killed (arrested) within an area controlled by that kingdom or else it becomes murder unless you have been issued a warrant for their arrest (see below). Typically kingdoms control the city, every home and building within it and the areas with homes outside in the countryside. You are safe attacking any player who is running from the law in those areas. If you enter an area and get a message stating that you are in a hostile area it means you are NOT in a kingdoms jurisdiction, if you see a guard at his post in an area, you are almost guaranteed that it is controlled.

True Bounty Hunting: Players that are wanted for crimes exceeding 10 demerits will have a bounty on their heads offered by the kingdom. These bounties will be posted in an appropriate place in the kingdom (Hall of Kathena in Torr City handles all kingdoms) and a warrant can be issued to any player willing to hunt them down. Killing a player while you have a warrant for their arrest in your inventory allows you to arrest that player no matter where they are, even in the middle of a dungeon. These bounties provide the same XP but also offer payment by the kingdom based on the demerits of the criminal. You can only have a one bounty on one player at a time and this item can be used to track the individual as well as tell you if they are still wanted. Exiled players are worth XP on death as hostile monsters and do not need a bounty in order to kill.
